It's a Saturday morning. After a busy and hectic week, you have nothing scheduled. Your wife and kids are happily occupied with things that don't involve you. Time to mentally check out, retreat to the man cave and find something to do that doesn't involve anything other than what is physically in front of you. On the radio in the background, there are some old blokes musing laconically about football. You don't really know what you'll be doing, but it will involve tools and not giving a flip about anything else for a little while. You may even need to make a trip to the hardware store at some stage... who knows?
"Tooling-a-Round" is the first movement of what is (planned to be) a multi-movement work for concert band, depicting the cherished role of backyard shed in the life of a typical suburban middle-aged family man. Quavers are to be played rhythmically swung, with articulations observed whole-heatedly to highlight the playful and irreverent mood throughout - staccato markings in particular are to be exaggerated. The sound of real tools should be used in the percussion parts where indicated (e.g. saw, file, hammer, toolbox, circular saw, power drill etc.) with rhythms to be approximated in order to give the impression of a project getting underway as the piece progresses and the protagonist meanders from one task to the next.
This piece is dedicated to busy fathers who work hard to preserve their capacity to create, play and explore.

- Movement 1 - Love in the First Degree
The opening movement, drawn from the Bananarama hit tune begins in true British style: a resolute solo euphonium marching a famous canon (Pachelbel's Canon in D) into position to a distant military drum, thus establishing the predominant harmonic framework from which the remainder of the work is developed. - Movement 2 - I Should be so Lucky
This lively re-arrangement of Kylie Minogue's breakthrough hit opens with a irreverant nod to Pachelbel's canon and Big Ben's famous Westminster Quarters tune, before taking off in a quirky and vituosic romp with the title theme. Some colorful additions to the percussion section (chimes, ratchet, woodblocks, triangle) help to create a very playful atmosphere, with xylophone featuring prominently throughout. Listeners may also recognise another well-known "sexy" brit-pop tune from the late 20th century sneakily introduced by the bassoon at one point. While technically challenging at times, the playful and irreverant spirit of this movement is sure to please audiences and players alike.

Set to an evocative adagio, a lush re-imaginging of this Rick Astley favourite brings out the full expressive qualities of the full Symphonic Wind ensemble. The opening canonic motif from movement 1, widely prevalent throughout Stock Aitken and Waterman's songwriting, provides the basis for a darker reharmonisation of the movements title theme. The main melody is introduced by a solo tenor saxophone (or optional fludgelhorn), before building to an exquisite climax that will leave your audience breathless. - Movement 4 - Together Forever
This re-arrangement of Rick Astley's Together Forever presents the listener with a dramatic, but ultimately triumphant finale. Powered by a distant pulsating rhythm borne from a theme from the previous movement (Never Gonna Give You Up), the listener is transported through a dramatic journey of excitement as the main theme is introduced in the low brass. At times, the overall forward momentum is contrasted with some intimate reductions in the texture, to allow the soloistic mastery of some of the ensemble's individual players to shine, while still maintaining the inevitable push towards the spectacularly rousing finish that will have your audience on their feet....
